Parents hold a very high status in Islam. The Quran commands kindness and respect towards them, especially in old age. Their rights include obedience (in what is lawful), kind speech, financial support if needed, and making du'a for them. Even if they are non-Muslim or difficult, maintaining good relations and respectful treatment is obligatory, though obedience is only in what is halal.
